Tracking the Giant Anteaters

We now have 18 of these magnificient animals roaming the estancia 'Rincon del Socorro' which is owned by Conservation LandTrust - 7 females, 7 males and 4 babies that were born here whose gender is unknown.

There are more in quarantine, and as the project is now quite well known in Argentina, we are having plenty of offers of young anteaters.

In charge of the handling of this re-introduction project is Yamil de Blanco who devotes almost all of his time to monitoring these animals with the help of volunteers.   Some of them have radio collars and some need supplemental feeding, especially the newcomers, but the idea behind the project is to liberate these animals into the Esteros del Ibera where they have been extinct since the 1970s.

See the page on 'Giant Anteater Reintroduction' for more details.

We need more infra-red remote cameras for the project so we can monitor the anteaters and also an assistant to help Yamil.  Therefore we have decided to offer 8 of these beautiful animals for adoption to try to raise some funds.

Here are some photos and names of the anteaters: mostly they wear radio collars so we can track their progress.

Giant Anteater, Oso Hormiguero

Mishky - female of 4 years.
Mishky spent the first few months of her life in a private home, where whe was probably malnourished as few people know what to feed an anteater.  She was then rescued by a private zoo.  Somewhere along the line she had her tail partially amputated (see photo above).   She was donated to the project by the zoo
and at first struggled to put on any weight so we had to give her supplementary food.  She now lives independently in the woods, has put on weight and is healthy.

Cub, Tecové, on right - now about 18 months old.
Ivoty was the first released anteater in the project in 2007.  She has now had 3 cubs - Tecové was the first, born about April 2009.

This remote photo is of Ivoty with her new cub (2 or 3 days old) on her back.  It was taken on 10 June 2010.
This year, 2011, she has another cub which will be her 3rd since she had been at the reserve.

Tota - a female of between 7 -10 years.  She was rescued from the province of Salta and released 2 years ago into the reserve.  Her radio signal stopped in Oct 2008 and she disappeared for a year.  To the team's delight she was seen at a farm 50km to the south in November 2009 still wearing her radio collar.  The team's vets went there, located her and brought her back to 'Socorro' after tranquilising her. Tota now has a young cub.

Machetero - now 3 years old - was rescued from the province of Santiago del Estero as a young cub after his mother was killed.  He was donated to the project and after spending time in quarantine he was released into the reserve in May 2009.  He is now a healthy anteater of normal  weight and he eats a regular diet of ants and termites without any supplementation.

Supay is a 2 year old male also from Santiago del Estero. The unique fact about this animal is that he has never lived in captivity and was captured by hunters as a young adult.  He was released into the reserve in September 09 and was not interested in any of the supplemental feeding but went straight to work on the ant and termite hills.

Hatá - a young male -had a very unfortunate experience as a cub in that he was hit by a car in Santiago del Estero.  He was badly injured with a broken femur and shotgun pellets in his chest. The vets from the project spent 9 months rehabilitating him with several operations.  Finally he was healthy enough to be released into the reserve in the last week of June 2009.

Panchita, a  young female from Santiago del Estero was being looked after by a vet when she was donated to the project.  She was just 5.5 kg in weight. This picture shows her on the patio of the house from which she came.  After several months in quarantine, she was released in the reserve on 14 October 2010 along with 4 other anteaters.
